Have a Cup of Coffee is with a Cop Day is being celebrated Wednesday, November 15, from 1 to 3 p.m., McDonald’s Restaurant, 5011 Sherbrooke Street W. The purpose of what has now become an international day, is to give members of the community an opportunity to talk about the issues that matter to them and get to know the police officers in the neighbourhood. Coffee with A Cop was launched in Hawthorne, California in 2011, after a a brainstorming session in which members of the Hawthorne Police Department were seeking ways to interact better with its citizens.
The mission of Coffee with a Cop is to break down the barriers between police officers and the citizens they serve. Since its inception, community policing has long considered a framework for establishing trust between the community and the police. Over time the evolution of urban dynamics communities have changed due to shifting demographics, more commuters, and the introduction of different communication methods such as websites and social media.
The Hawthorne Police Department hit upon a simple plan to break through the barriers that have been built over the years–a cup of coffee. In less than five years, Coffee with a Cop events have been hosted in all 50 states and is one of the most successful community oriented policing programs across the country. The program has also expanded to outside the Unites States to Canada… the first Coffee with a Cop in Canada was hosted in Montreal… Europe, Australia, and Africa.
