“Friends and supporters help to make our theatre evening one of Generations Foundation’s most successful fundraisers.” says Adrian Bercovici, co-founder and co-director with wife Natalie of Generations Foundation. ” Thank you for your continued support. Since our first theatre evening 16 years ago, this event has contributed significantly to our food programs for children in need.”
Generations Foundation, invites the public to join in the fun of enjoying the Montreal premiere of the Million Dollar Street Quartet at its annual benefit performance Wednesday, May 10 at 8 p.m. at the Segal Centre, 5170 Côte-Ste.-Catherine Road.
For 16 years Adrian and Natalie Bercovici, directors of Generations Foundation, have chosen a play from the Segal Centre’s upcoming year’s program to book a night that is solely a benefit performance for the charity that daily feeds over 8400 kids in over 120 schools and learning centres on the island of Montreal.
This year they are presenting the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Million Dollar Street Quartet. Based on the book by Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux and directed by Lisa Rubin, the musical tells the story of how on December 4, 1956, Sam Phillips, the father of Rock ‘n’ Roll, American musician, businessman, record executive, music producer, and disc jockey, brought together four music giants Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley, at the Sun Record Studios in Memphis, Tennessee for a (recorded) impromptu jam session that would ultimately be considered a formative moment in rock and roll history. An article about the event was published in the Memphis Press-Scimitar under the title “Million Dollar Quartet”.
Inspired by the true story, the play features some of the 1950’s most beloved hits. The recording was first released in Europe in 1981 as The Million Dollar Quartet with 17 tracks. A few years later more tracks were discovered and released as The Complete Million Dollar Session. In 1990, the recordings were released in the United States as Elvis Presley – The Million Dollar Quartet.
Audience members on the evening of the Generations benefits performance not only enjoy the show, but also have an opportunity to meet the cast at the benefit exclusive after-theatre reception that also features a buffet sandwich and dessert table, celebrity hosts, and a varied array of interesting door prizes.
