Generations Foundation: Why?

“Focus, focus, focus,” Adrian Bercovici, founder and director of the children’s charity Generations Foundation, recently told members and guests during a presentation at a luncheon at The Rotary Club of Westmount.”Whatever you do, focus on it.”

In a rare candid talk,  Adrian shared  his story of why he and his wife  Natalie and Generations’ start up supporters in 1999 launched the charity  that focuses on feeding children and today provides hot nutritious lunches and nutritious after school snacks daily to  over 8500 kids in over 110 schools and learning centres on the island of Montreal, including Westmount.

Adrian’ s career of making a difference in community began when he worked for CN for 38 years and had the hands on opportunity to make a difference in community. That passion increased when he worked for the Old Brewery Mission where he spent eight years finding ways and means to get  homeless men and ultimately homeless women off the streets and into safe shelters.

When St. Gabriel’s elementary school in Point. St. Charles  came knocking for a solution to its kids falling asleep during classes. Adrian and Natalie put their heads together and realized that possibly the way to reach those kids was through their stomachs. Working from their basement in their home in Laval the committed couple started distributing meals to 175 kids from grades eight to 11 from a car. No more nodding off at their desks there or in other schools including Roslyn elementary and Westmount High School, where the students prepare breakfasts made with supplies from Generations Foundation.

Eighteen years later Generations Foundation works from a head office at 4210 Notre Dame West. Meals, that now include salads served with kid friendly dressings, are prepared by a local restaurant and delivered by Generations’ drivers. Adrian has become a super deal grocery shopper, searching out the best prices for staples such as cookies, milk and cheese products. The budget comes solely from corporate and private donations … no government sponsorship… and is followed rigorously to the penny.
